Quote from: 12_Gauge_Chimp on October 12, 2023, 02:53:59 PMSpeaking of ammo scalpers, anyone check what Cheaper Than Dirt is selling ammo for yet ?

I'm getting the feeling they'll be advertising 5.56 ammo at 90 bucks for a 20 round box here soon.
As of two minutes ago it was $9.89 for 20 rounds of 55 grain. Still within the realm of reasonable. I hope I am wrong.

https://www.cheaperthandirt.com/winchester-service-grade-5.56-nato-ammunition-20-rounds-fmj-55-grains/FC-020892225626.html

Seems to be about average from what I've seen online.

Knowing Cheaper Than Dirts MO when it comes to ammo shortages, it's only a matter of time before that 10 dollar box becomes a 50 dollar or higher box.

Raptor

Per Ammoseek the cheapest per box of 20 (bulk is slightly cheaper) is $7.99 per box +shipping and tax.

NOTE: I am not saying panic buy!
If you have sufficient inventory on hand, tracking the price of a box of 20 is IMO a good way to gauge the level of supplies available.

It has been reported that over the intertubes that Lake City has cancelled future sales of ammo to civilians. IMO this has not been "official" confirmed but at this point it is out and you may expect to see some pricing changes.

I will never claim to have all the answers. Depending upon the subject; I am also aware that I may not have all the questions much less the answers. As a result I am always willing to listen to others and work with them to arrive at the right answers to the applicable questions.

I would prefer to see an actual news source if you know of one. Unable to locate one myself. One would think that if there were multiple sources they would be easy to locate.

I think I'm good on 5.56 and 7.62x51. Could probably use a little more 9mm and .45ACP but I can't see any scenario where I manage to expend all my rifle and shotgun rounds and have to fight with just pistols and my PCC.  No fucking way is a fat old disabled fart like me gonna last that long.

I could use more 12ga. slugs though, simply because I like sending those fat cannonballs downrange to rattle the steel at 100 yards. I can put 8 on steel at that range in under 25 seconds.  :shades:

I'd like to pick up some more .45 ACP, 7.62x39 and 5.56, but I may have to wait a bit until my finances are in a better place.

Actually if this is as stated, then this would not be a negative event for the shareholders since the .gov would be buying all "excess production". Typically this type of event is not listed here unless an SEC filing is required.

I do not disagree with your skepticism however. The fact that there appears to be a single source also made me cautious which is why I wrote the post that way.
Now I will also note the 2n qtr presentation earnings package.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/b2icontent.irpass.cc/1548/190981.pdf

Page 3 shows they are expecting q3 (now) to be 10% lower due to "Competative Commercial Pricing". That is CFO speak for sales price for commercial ammo sales being lower enough to offset the projected growth in other Contracts. They make more money on .gov contracts unless commercial (you & me) ammo prices are silly high.
Quote3Q Adjusted EBITDA will be approximately 10% lower than 2Q • Winchester – international and domestic military growth – partially offset by competitive commercial pricing
As a consequence one of their key initiatives (page 4) is:
QuoteWinchester – Doubling military sales via domestic & international growth
They want to make military sales 2x.

All of this would be reason for them to reduce civilian sales for all but the highest margin customers. Accordingly it would not surprise me if they limited renewal commercial sales agreements.

I didn't know Hornady had another fire a few years ago.

I asked a friend who was going to town to pick me up another box of .30-06 and a couple boxes of .44 mag. Everything else I've either got quite a bit of or I don't care that much about.

I asked the friend to buy inexpensive ammo because I already had a few boxes of the good stuff in .44 and .30-06 but didn't have much less expensive practice ammo.

The cheapest 180 grain .30-06 was $49 a box and the cheapest .44 mag was $56 a box.  :gonk:

I haven't bought ammo for either of those cartridges in a couple years. I hope that it was just hunting season wiping out the selection of less expensive stuff and that this ammo is actually decent and not that this is the new normal price for the cheapest options.

That's more along the lines of what I was expecting! Unfortunately ammunition can't be shipped to Alaska because it's considered hazmat.

I spent some time looking up the stuff he got and it looks like the .30-06 (Hornady Outfitter 180 grn CX) was pretty high-end. I'm guessing moose hunting season just wiped out most of their selection.

Yes sorry about that...

The Hornady premium ammo in my area is closer to $75 a box due to hunting season. I do not even look for hunting ammo in my area this time of year since the pricing is silly high.
