... just as flu season begins.

Surge of viruses leaves children's hospitals scrambling to free up beds and find room for patients
excerpts:
"Doctors are also seeing cases of rhinovirus, enterovirus, adenovirus and several coronaviruses, including Covid."
(Where I am covid hospitalizations are up)

"Because of this fall surge of respiratory viruses among children, around three-quarters of pediatric hospital beds nationwide are now full, according to data from the Department of Health and Human Services."

"That is forcing hospitals around the country to resort to the contingency plans reserved for such crises: They are sending sick kids to other states to receive care or are making space in other wards, like specialty units or postoperative recovery areas. Some hospitals are sending ICU patients directly home once their cases are no longer acute, rather than to another floor. And many on-call nurses are working extra hours."

"If we get influenza on top of RSV, that is going to put another significant strain on the system."

"The surge has caught doctors off guard, since cases of RSV and other respiratory viruses usually peak in winter. RSV cases this year started climbing in the summer. The weekly number of positive tests rose more than fivefold from Aug. 13 to Oct. 15."

This happened in Australia too. I couldn't find other countries reporting same. At least yet?

I, personally, know one family here with all four kids sick with it as well as one of the parental units.

Ah hah. 😒

In addition this one, unlike covid but more typical of viruses, is also Heavy on transmission objects or materials which are likely to carry infection, such as clothes, utensils, furniture, and allll those kleenex being used, hands touching nose & mouth areas, elevator buttons, door handles, things in grocery someone has previously picked up to examine, grocery carts & baskets, grocery touch screens and password for cards at checkout. Basically everything one hand touches that another hand can touch. (fomites)

See movie Contagion for a visual depiction of this.

So more people in the workforce off sick and/or off taking care of their sick children.

Financial strain increases for businesses and customers alike. Just what we need more of.

Or those who to work with it and shop with it and go to family & social gatherings with it giving it to my grandkids' grandparents.

Doctors and hospital bills. Insurance raises premiums or refuses partial claims.

Increasing financial strain on those who can pay, can't pay, those who weren't paid.

Yup, the Earth is trying to rid itself of us.

NapalmMan67

Well that was odd, I quoted one of your posts and it didn't show, nor my reply...

Anyway, as to the "Yup, the Earth is trying to rid itself of us." statement.

I'm fairly certain all species self regulate their population numbers.  So, no surprise to me.

Flu and RSV hybrid virus studied in a lab for the first time Amid a 'triple-demic,' scientists investigate two of the viruses interactions and co-infections.

Excerpt:
"As a possible fall and winter "triple-demic" of influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 ramps up in the United States, scientists are learning more about hybrid viruses and co-infections that occur when two viruses infect cells at the same time.

"RSV and the flu can form a hybrid virus that can escape our immune system's best defenses and infect lung cells, according to a study published earlier this week in the journal Nature Microbiology. The study marks the first time that such a cooperation between viruses has been observed. The researchers believe that it could help explain why co-infections can lead to significantly worse illness in some patients, including the notoriously difficult to treat viral pneumonia. Since viral pneumonia is caused by a virus and not bacteria like bacterial pneumonia, it doesn't respond to antibiotics for treatment."

"Some previous studies show that co-infections do not alter the outcome of disease, wile others have found an increase in cases of viral pneumonia from them."

So no replicated studies data yet on this currently. Another round of 'it's everywhere, it's everywhere'  :panic:  as those of us immune compromised wade through the flu season. urm.. the possible triple-demic season.

Update on the ^^^ above parental unit who's children & she have RSV: the PU is 'really' ill as of today. Respiratory. Family is circling around becoming very concerned.

That settles it for me because my body already lives to make things respiratory for me so i do not want this thing.

I wish green tea was a magic amulet against respiratory stuff. I drink strong tea. Plenty of it too.

Does anyone have skills with making confirmable workable magic amulets that ward off respiratory illness? I'll take two.

I had the nasty,  vicious  cold that is going around our area. It takes about a month to get over, but the scratchy cough can take another couple of months to go away. Sooooo many people ended up with bronchitis and/or pneumonia from it and I know some ended up hospitalized. A few folks I know that had Covid said this cold is WORSE than having Covid. :eek1:
No amulets here, sorry.
Mucinex, Dayquil, fluids and lots of hot, steamy showers. Also rest.
That's what worked for me.

That RSV can be some rough stuff. My youngest caught it about 2 years ago, and it knocked him for a loop. When it comes to helping clear out sinus issues taking a very hot, steamy shower combined with these Vicks Vaposhower tabs worked great. Of course Mucinex DM and lots of hot tea and honey never hurts...

Viruses evolving to cooperate with each other is less than ideal, though still lower on my "oh, shit" meter than zombie fungus infections.

The other undesirable feature of the RSV infection is that it's largely pediatric, meaning not only are poor little bits ill, but children are not known for skill in taking precautions that would help slow or eliminate spread.  They touch everything without a second though and are always putting their hands in their faces.

I'm reminded of when one of my children used to run up and hug my leg for the sole purpose of wiping his nose on my pants.  Total bait and switch.

Feed science, not zombies!

Failure is the path of least persistence.

Get a pez dispenser of your favorite cartoon character and fill it with antibiotics. Possible side effects include complete destruction of your gut biome.

Flu season hasn't started in my area yet. Summer ran nearly til the end of October and abruptly shifted to deep fall just a few days ago. Weirdest and most abrupt shift in season ever. I expect flu season will start in a few weeks now.

I'm not sure what to make of the concern over pediatric beds being 75% full. I live in a region that has been growing at an incredible rate since I was a kid, and our hospitals don't have such a low rate of occupancy at the best of times. I've never seen or heard of one of our hospitals not being at the edge of capacity.

Anyone know what the "normal" occupancy rate is for comparison?
