I had an extra cheapo padded sling with sewn on cheapo sling mounts that I had gotten off the closeout rack at Walmart a hundred years ago and never used. And a Daisy 856. And I had recently ordered an Uncle Mikes shotgun sling swivel set for a Mav 88 which gave me an extra buttstock sling mount since the Mav88 already had the mount on the stock. So I had parts looking for a purpose.

On the pivot point for the Daisy 856 pump handle there is this circular recess that just begs to be drilled out to mount a sling swivel. Perfect size and location.

So I did it.

And then predrilled the stock to take the buttstock sling mount. That stock is just plastic and only about 1/8" thick before you hit the hollow. Thought I used the right size bit to predrill it but when I screwed the mount in, it 'whitened' up when I tightened it and then it's started to split a few days later.

You can see the 'white' pressure spot on the top which manifested as I was screwing in the mount, and the split which came later. It's still really secure though.

I'll try to fix this up. First will be superglue and redrilling and tightening by 1/2 turn less. If that don't work a plastic welding repair job.

Any other ideas?  :smiley_shrug:

Glue , heat up a staple and  melt it into the plastic then wrap the stock very tight with para cord.Leaving the sling mount exposed.

I forget the substances but I've watched more than a few videos about plastic repair. And if you mix gas with something. Maybe more plastic? It melts into really good diy glue. You can mix that with other stuff for texture and color it. I've seen several videos. Just search YouTube for plastic repair or diy glue.

Obviously you want to glue and clamp the stock. I I've seen them use the above diy glue to refill the crack and entire hole. Then redrill. They even use it to reform parts of plastic parts with missing pieces.

Great project.

You really need some squirrel camo tho! They might see you. Paint it! Lol!

Meld 3d printer filament with a heat gun/ lighter? Or any PTFE tube. I'd first try it out on something else though.

Good Ideas. I'm going to start simple.

As it is right now the cracks are spread apart so I should be able to get superglue in there real good and then remove the sling mount which should bring the cracks back together to get a perfect weld. Then I'd enlarge the hole very slightly before putting the mount back in. Maybe heat it to see if I can get that white pressure spot out. And make sure I put the mount back in with 1/2 turn less.

I have a plastic welding kit with those staples that I can just burn in and reinforce those edges that cracked. That will work for sure but would probably not look great even after sanding and finishing. This would be my second choice and I hope the first one works. Plastic Welders

I might finish it by fabricating a rectangle of metal or plastic, painting it black, and mounting that over that area and running the sling mount thru it. That would look like its part of the mount. And hide the flaws while reinforcing the area.

KISS - fixed?!

I used a caliper and measured the mount's thread root at 3.95mm and the hole I drilled was only 3.45mm. So I messed that up. I had done what i normally do which is just hold drill bits up to the bolt's thread root to size which bit to use.

I was off a bit and the plastic was unforgiving.

When I removed the bolt the crack in the plastic did not recede so the superglue idea changed a little.

Anyhow I redrilled the hole to 4mm, filled the cracks with superglue and baking powder, and reinstalled the sling mount with 1/2 a turn less torque. This will remove the pressure causing the cracks and prevent further damage, hopefully.

Note to self: make sure you drill the right sized hole in hard plastics.
