Finally picked up these two containers at Walmart.

Aqua-Tainer is a 7 gallon stackable water container that comes with a start/stop water spigot control. It's shape lends itself to stacking and multiple container storage of large amounts of water in both the vertical and horizontal space.

The Ozark water jug is 6 gallons and is shaped more like a jerry can. It comes with a pouring spigot. This one's shape lends it more for storage in vehicles or in low rows along walls or on shelves.

Both containers' 'spigots' store inside the container when not in use. But the Ozark jug has a stopper that when using the spigot has to be set aside and therefor you could lose it. That 'stopper' is a cover for  when the spigot is reversed and stored internally. So when its in it's deployed positioning, you'll have to keep track of that.

Both container's are made in Winnepeg Canada. So I suspect by the same company.

I'll probably be getting a bunch more of these Aqua-Tainers. They are currently $20. I might get one more of the Ozarks just for vehicle storage, I'm using this one in a vehicle. It's really big though.

How much is the ozark?

Aquatainer is 7 gallons. That's alot of weight. I like that its stackable. But have concerns about other family members being able to hoist it. Can it be stored in its side? Without fear of the spout failing?

What made you decide on these two vs other containers?

I have to admit I think my usgi 5 gal jerry cans are overkill. And far to expensive. That and their non stackability makes me want to buy others in the future. I don't recall the brand. But I liked those 3 gallon stackable ones we discussed in another thread. But I think they were on the more expensive side iirc.

That's what I want to know.  Particularly when they're laden with with water.  If one tips over or shifts in a stack unexpectedly, how robust/secure are the lids and spigots?  I'm speaking from painful experience.

Aquatainer was $20 and full of water would weigh 56#. And it's made to be turned on it's side to utilize the spout. So I'm sure it'll be just as watertight on its side without the spout deployed. But it is made to store with the handle up. There is a groove on the bottom that is made to marry with the handle and caps to make it stackable. I plan to stack these 4 high.

The Ozark [grey container] was $17 and holds 6 gallons which weighs 48# full. I don't think it's stackable.

I got these as a recommended bargain posted by @Anianna, well the Aquatainer, and saw the Ozark also and thought that would work well as a vehicle water storage.

Ah. I see how the main cap is a reversable nozzle (?). I thought the small cap was the nozzle.

$20 seems cheap for a container that size with that much functionality.

#5
I need to standardize. I know. But these are what I'm using now. [I also have a 16,500 gallon pool, a lake, a canal, and a well. And multiple filtration systems to make those drinkable in a pinch.]

I have a few of the 6 1/2 gallon white containers and a few of the 5 gallon water cooler dispenser jugs.  The gatoraid bottles and the arizona Ice tea bottles are kept empty until a hurricane warning is issued and then we have about 30 of those we fill. And keep the Zephirhills bottles under all the sinks in the bathrooms. The Aquatainer and the Ozark are new and I only have 1 each of those right now.

The new Aquatainer will eventually replace all the small bottles as I get more of them. I probably won't get any more of the Ozarks as they aren't stackable.

The water in the white 6.5 gal jugs was about 5 years old and so I rotated it out last weekend. It was stored straight out of the faucet with no bleach added. I did a taste test.

The water looked clean and clear. So I filled up a glass with it, and took a small sip. Tasted fine, but the sip was kinda small and it didn't taste flat or odd as i'd expected it might. Just a slight 'plastic' taste maybe.

But then I started emptying out the containers and when I was done I went to grab the glass for a larger swig and found that my wife had dumped it out also.  :headbang: 5 years down the drain.

That's just a little bit of dust on the outside, not mold.

Looks clean and clear.

I rinsed them out with some bleach and water then refilled right out of the faucet. And this time added a few drops more of bleach. The combo of rinsing with bleach is usually more than enough beach to kill any bacteria to added water at that point. The drops were just in case.

When possible I don't use soap to clean them 'cause it takes a lot of rinsing to get the soap residue out of the jugs. To clean them out just add a little water and a 1/4 cup of bleach or so, I eyeball it. Shake it up, dump it out. Then refill.

Just ordered another Aquatainer for $18 at Walmart online. $2 less than the last one.

These are stack-ons BTW. Can probably go 4 high.

Does Aquatainer or anyone else make a stackable gas can? I have two usgi ones. Not stackable. But both need a metal ring and gasket at top. But current price is kind of high. I paid $50 each. But need to aoend another $35 or so in the gasket and metal piece.

Still have not decided between more usgi or the wwii rivian(?) models available from other countries military used. Or new models. Of course not stackable. These Aquatainers for gas would be super cool.

$15 for a 5 gallon water container that stacks is incredible. How does the thickness of the plastic compare - to say a usgi water can?

You would think gatorade would have cheaped out on a lighter bottle. But damn even the small ones are bombproof. Sometime in the future our grand children will be collecting them. As everything else will be so - one time use cheap!

Yes, just web search "stackable gas can" a few solutions pop up. But it might be better to get one of those really big ones with the built in wheels and fuel nozzle. For boating/wave runners.

I don't have a usgi but they are as thick as the gas cans.

Aren't carboys also used in homebrewing cider or beer ?

I doubt it is suitable for gasoline.

Look around for a 55 gallon drum. These are safe for gas and are likely cheaper to boot.

I need something car transportable. The Midwest brand 5 gallon water containers are stackable. About $22. Or less deoending in how many you buy. They also have 2.5gal as well. But they need new nozzles and the filter screen removed.

It's amazing how many times I've read about people spilling gas with the CARB compliant nozzles. Not to mention that with the filter screens you can not get a gas pump to pour gas into them. Wth?!!

It's probably best to stick with the color coding to know what goes in them.

While the side thickness and materials are the same. The nozzles and spouts are different.

Gas will not dissolve this plastic like some of the other plastics. But the spout would make it impractical for gas. And it's not interchangeable with a gas spout as the diameter is different.

The new gas cans are POS devices. They leak and are unsuitable for fuel transport. If you can find the older ones at garage sales buy em! That or the Midwest model 5600 are good but you have to use the older nozzles. The new "anti-spill" nozzles are a joke. You can find parts on line to replace the nozzles on the Midwest cans. That and to retrofit them with a vent so they pour smoothly.

When I suggested a 55 gallon drum I suggested that as a storage tank. I keep a drum of fuel and simply refill it with 5 gallon cans as needed. I simply siphon fuel from the 55 gallon drum into a smaller can as I need.

BTW if you are storing gasoline (or diesel) for longer than 4 months you should add appropriate fuel stabilizer to the fuel. The fuels especially if they have ethanol will attract moisture from the air and start to breakdown fairly quickly.

Also you should have as little air as possible in any storage tank and close off any vent unless you are accessing the fuel. The reduced air circulation reduces the moisture that is present to be absorbed.
