Notable Deaths of 2024

Bill Cobbs, a prolific character actor who had a 50-year career with almost 200 film and TV credits, died Tuesday at his home in Riverside, Calif., his rep confirmed. He was 90.

I most associate him with the movie Demolition Man, where he played the old version of the cop that Stallone had worked with prior to being frozen.

Lone Star Cafe bought all the pinball machines and video games in their upstairs arcade from Novell Amusements on 10th Avenue in NYC (area called Pinball Alley).  I was Novell Amusements head technician.  I used to go to the Lone Star pretty often, and after I finished what I was called to fix it was usually quitting time so, being single, I'd just hang out in the bar and drink the free beers they kept giving me.  Lone Star became a favorite of mine (the cafe and the beer).  Kinky and his band (The Texas Jewboys) often played there and Kinky was writing A Case of Lone Star at the time and he'd often hold court in the bar and discuss books, politics, music and I'd usually catch up with him when the crowd thinned and we'd tell jokes to each other and try not to let beer come out our noses.  He was a very cool dude.  About ten years older than me and he often called me a kid, but he liked that I was a vet, and that I had the keys to all the games.

Shelley Duvall, the saucer-eyed, rail-thin waif who starred in seven films directed by her mentor, Robert Altman, and avoided the ax wielded by an unhinged Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining, died Thursday. She was 75.

If I'm remembering correctly, she was a sniper (she trained as one, but never actually saw combat. Though she was seriously wounded in a mortar attack) in the IDF many years ago.
