At least 40 people were killed and 100 wounded at the Crocus City Hall in Moscow. The perpetrators were neither captured or killed. They were described as wearing combat fatigues and "bearded". The building is still on fire.

An imminent attack warning was issued by the US embassy earlier this month, advising Americans to avoid crowded places.

I'm wondering if the Chechens are starting to feel a little froggy now that Russia and Ukraine have been going at it for awhile.

If my memory serves me right, the guys who laid siege to that school in Beslan were Chechens and were "bearded" and dressed in combat fatigues as well.

I would've thought Chechens or possibly Russian military protestors would end up being the ones behind the attack.  However, ISIS is now claiming that it was them.

Also the Moscow Opera House attack. This is much more their modus operandi.

However-

Islamic State is currently claiming it. They have a long history of attacking Russian targets since their intervention in Syria. Russia came out strong against the US proposed UN Gaza ceasefire resolution today but has been dropping clues about it all month.

Here is the thing. I think we should expect a similar attack in China and possibly even the US. The US vetoed three other resolutions all on their own. Thousands of Palestinians have crossed the Southern Border and are God only knows where.

Attacks have been shown to be effective near elections (think the Spain train attacks). I would say use more and more caution the closer we get to the November election.

Agreed.  Now is probably as good a time as any to remind everyone to hang onto their hats, consider being low profile, and keep our heads on a swivel.  Things are likely to get nutty in the coming months.

Anyone else having a hard time making sense of this?  I mean besides the obvious: slaughtering innocent civilians will never make sense to me.  Russia isn't exactly high of the list of nations that currently have my sympathy.  But this is one of those situations where I can honestly say I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

But what does the Islamic State hope to gain from this?  What exactly are they even trying to say?

And the fact that all four alleged perpetrators were taken alive also doesn't quite add up in my mind.  Aren't Islamic terrorists generally more than eager to martyr themselves, go to meet Allah and gather their reward of thirty virgins?   Something smells fishy here ...

Here is a lot more from AJ on ISIS-K. They aren't always suicide attackers and target innocents all the time. Real baby killers to be sure. Even the crazies think they are crazy. The article appears to be quite accurate and on point.

QuoteThe ISIL affiliate was previously blamed for carrying out a bloody attack on a maternity ward in Kabul in May 2020 that killed 24 people, including women and infants.

Quote"I think their ideology inspires them in terms of selecting targets. First of all, Russia is in Syria and fighting against Daesh [ISIL] like the United States. That means they see such countries as hostile," Aslan told Al Jazeera.

QuoteIn September 2022, the group took responsibility for a deadly suicide bombing at the Russian embassy in Kabul.

QuoteDefence and security analysts say the group has targeted its propaganda at Russian President Vladimir Putin in recent years over the alleged oppression of Muslims by Russia.

Lots more at the link with some decent analysis.

I have a real problem defending in any way the wanton murder of non-combatants in any situation; even if they are"collateral damage".

Intellectually I understand why these acts occur for political reasons. That said, that is where my understanding and acceptance ends.

The arrests of the suspects appear to me to be the arrest of the "usual suspects". An attack like this has in the past resulted in perps fighting to the death. Normally the 1st responders are trying to end the matter ASAP usually violently. So yes survivors are surprising.

Folks you are on your own...Plan and act accordingly!

I will never claim to have all the answers. Depending upon the subject; I am also aware that I may not have all the questions much less the answers. As a result I am always willing to listen to others and work with them to arrive at the right answers to the applicable questions.

This group attacks everyone. They have carried out attacks in:

Afghanistan - Including the final attack on USF's at the airport during the withdraw, and continue to fight the Taliban
Iran - Killing more than 100 in bombing this year.
Pakistan- Numerous attacks
Tajikistan and Uzbekistan - Numerous rocket attacks

The reason I think they may also attack China is because of the situation with the Uyghurs and their support for various enemies (practically everyone) as excuses. The US is never off limits.

Personally I believe that with the US gone and never returning they realize that they need another state to enter Afghanistan and attack the Taliban. Their recent interest in attacking more foreign targets is likely an attempt to draw another nation into the conflict and force the Taliban to fight them as well. Iran, Russia, Pakistan would all work. The problem with China is that the border is heavily controlled and getting in and out would be a huge challenge. Plus they would stick out like a snake in Ireland.
